Los Angeles City Firefighters Association (LAFFA) had been the local representative to the California State Firefighters Association (CSFA) for over 98 years. Participation included attending the annual conference, and having members on the CSFA Board to provide input into the needs of our membership and shape the California fire service.

Additionally, LAFFA has honored our own firefighters for over 50 years by hosting the “Annual Firefighter of The Year” luncheon that recogonizes members that have gone above and beyond the call of duty for our members.

Lastly, LAFD rank and LAFFA continues to focus on the safety, training and education and other needs of our members.

Monthly membership meetings are held on the first payday of each month via Zoom meetings (Covid-19 social distancing) or at the Los Angeles Police Academy Cafe when in-person meetings resume. Breakfast is provided for those who attend in person.

We are saddened by the passing of this LAFD recruit who taken too soon and our thoughts are with his loved ones as they grieve his loss. The men and women of your Los Angeles Fire Department mourn the passing of Recruit Firefighter Jacob Fuerte.

At 5:14 AM this morning, a tragic incident occurred on the NB 101 Freeway at Vineland Avenue in Studio City. An LAFD recruit on his way to the Drill Tower Academy for training may have been involved in a traffic collision. He got out of his vehicle to likely assess the situation and help anyone in need when he was hit by another car. Our own firefighter paramedics responded quickly to the scene, but unfortunately, they had to declare our member deceased.

LAFD Recruit Firefighter Jacob Fuerte, 22, joined the LAFD on February 12, 2024. He was in week 10 of a 20-week rigorous training program. He is survived by his father, two sisters, and a brother.

Recruit Fuerte’s father is a 17-year veteran Firefighter/Paramedic with the department, and he has dedicated his life to helping others. Raised in the LAFD family, Recruit Fuerte understood the importance of helping those in need.

“I received devastating news this morning that one of our colleagues lost their life tragically. He had just started his firefighting career, which requires courage, bravery, and prioritizing others before oneself. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family during this most difficult time.” said City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is conducting a hit-and-run investigation into this tragedy's circumstances. Any members of the public with information that may assist with this investigation, are encouraged to contact the CHP West Valley Area Office at 818-888-0980 Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm.
